To celebrate Career Month at Niagara College this January, the college is giving away free business attire to students as part of its third annual Dress to Impress event.

Hosted by the college's career services department, the free clothing giveaway event runs from Jan. 29 at the the college's Niagara-on-the-Lake campus to Jan. 30 at the Welland campus.

“Many students are struggling financially, many have left their jobs to pursue their education, and we find that they really appreciate the help they receive through this event,” said Marsha Fiorino, co-op career consultant and employer support of career services, in a news release.

“I’ve seen students at the event in tears. They just can’t believe that we are giving them the clothes for free.”

The goal is to ready students for job interviews and networking events leading up to the college's largest job recruitment event of the year, the Career Fair, which takes place at Welland campus on Feb. 5 and the NOTL campus on Feb. 6 and 7.

Dress to Impress will see career services staff on site assisting students with free business clothing and supporting them with professional advice on making a positive impression with potential employers.

The staff have been collecting clothing donations for months leading up to the event. Items have been collected from college employees, college retirees, community residents, local businesses and charitable organizations, including St. Catharines Meridian branches and corporate office as well as NOTL-based organization Newark Neighbours.

“We would like to thank everyone who has so generously donated since, without them, the event would not be possible,” said Fiorino in a release.

To receive free clothing and accessories, students are to visit the NOTL campus on Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SAC Activity Room located in the lower level in cafeteria and student commons area.

The event will continue at the Welland Campus on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Applied Health Institute foyer.

Dress to Impress is part of several initiatives put on by the college's Carreer Month, which also included resume clinics, speed interviewing sessions and professional headshot photo shoots.
